Vehicle Aerodynamics and Battery Design Impacts

with Wouter Remmerie from Airshaper

Do you know that the design and the Aerodynamic of an Electric Vehicle can enable some Battery Technologies❗️And reciprocally your Battery Packaging can impact your car Aerodynamic?

Thanks to a « cleaner design » Battery Packs contribute to EV Aerodynamic. Car Manfacturers put a lot of effort in the under body design. For example, thanks to a special underbody cladding, Volkswagen is able to reduce the drag coefficient CD by 0.010 - 0.025. The VW Engineers estimate that this increases the ID.3 Range up to 6-15km.

Reciprocally, the Battery Technologies can impact the aerodynamic of the Vehicle. For example, by choosing a cooling plate or a cell-serpentine-side cooling, the thickness of the battery can be affected and thus impact the under-vehicle aerodynamics.

In this Episode, you will:
▪️Get examples of Battery Design and their consequences on Aerodynamic
▪️Hear about Aerodynamic Simulation and CFD case studies by Airshaper on the VW ID.3, the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Aptera
▪️Learn about the trends in EV related to drag coefficient and aerodynamic

Ask a Nerd is a Series of PodCast webinar talking about EV Technologies. You can find a new Episode each 2 weeks on YouTube host by Dr Cecile Pera and Tom Brimble from GreenPlates ZEV
