Battery Fire Risk - FIVE Conference Summary

Battery Fire Risk

Battery Fire Risk

The FIVE Conference is THE reference in Fire Risk for Transportation. It is organised each 2 years by RISE = Swedish πŸ‡ΈπŸ‡ͺ Lab on Fire Safety Engineering πŸ”₯ for Industrial and Transportation πŸš—πŸšŒ

All the papers are available for free here

Meanwhile, below is the summary of the the 2020 Edition related to Electric Vehicles πŸš—πŸ”Œ

1️⃣ Electric Vehicles πŸš—βš‘οΈare not more prone to sudden Fire than traditional IC Engines

2️⃣ BUT Fire fighters and general public are under-prepared to face Battery πŸ”‹ and Electricity specific Fire

3️⃣ There is a lack of official procedure in case of massive fire for e-bus 🚌 or e-truck especially when they are charging

4️⃣ Most of Battery Fires have been investigated on a cell or on a Module level but there are very few studies on full Pack and complete Vehicles 🚘

5️⃣ Full Combustion of a Battery πŸ”‹ releases more energy than its electric Capacity

6️⃣ Battery Fire πŸ”₯ involves 3 steps: (1) Gas release; (2) Fire; (3) Explosion

7️⃣ Hydrogen Fluoride (HF), a highly toxic and dangerous (skin damage πŸ™ŒπŸ») gas, is the major difference with conventional Battery Pack can release kg of HF

8️⃣ It is highly advised to charge your car in a separated garage ↔️ 🏑

Want to know more about about the principle and the mechanisms leading to Battery runaway?

Or maybe what can be the root causes leading to Battery Fire?
